Union Gospel Mission Men’s Shelter Seismic Upgrades

318 2nd Avenue, Seattle, WA
CLIENT: Union Gospel Mission
PROJECT COST: $2.4 million

Built in 1890, the historic Union Gospel Mission Men's Shelter located in Pioneer Square houses 275 men nightly and provides 1,200 meals daily. The project included rebuilding and bracing the parapets that failed during the 2001 Nisqually earthquake, as well as a complete seismic upgrade of this six-story building.

We worked with the client to value engineer the steel framing for the seismic upgrade. The client’s value engineer reviewed our suggestions, and agreed that 50% of the steel in the original design could be removed. The project cost changed from $2.89 million to $2.4 million, saving the client 17% of the original project cost.

The project was completed while Jackie Costigan was at Turner Construction, under Jackie’s leadership.
Role on project: General Contractor/Construction Manager.
